Common Name:
Yorkshire Terrier
Scientific Name:
Canis familiaris
Genus:

Canis

Species:

familiaris

Size:

Small

Height:

6 -7" (15 - 18cm)

Weight:

7 pounds (3.2kg)

Coat Type:

Long, straight, glossy and silky. Yorkies are born black with tan points and slowly grow in their adults coats over several months. Adult Yorkies can be black and tan, blue and tan, blue and gold, or black and gold. Regular grooming is needed, but this breed sheds very little.

Temperament / Behavior:

Yorkies must be taught that the human is the pack leader. Failure to do so can cause this breed to become suspicious of strangers and aggressive to strange dogs and small animals. This lack of pack leader can also cause the dog to become yappy and become demanding and dependent, sometimes resulting in jealous behaviors, becoming snappish if surprised, frightened or over-teased. Due to this nature, Yorkies are generally recommended for families with older or no children.

The Yorkshire Terrier breed is bold and active. They may be difficult to train and are are picky eaters, even when it comes to treats. They are most cuddly in their first 2-3 years of age.

Seeming oblivious to their small size, Yorkies are highly energetic, brave, loyal and clever.

Activity:

Because Yorkies are so active they benefit greatly from daily walks. They thoroughly enjoy playtime and romping the yard.
