We are newcomers to the great state of Texas, having moved here from Pennsylvania to be near our grandson.  Prior to our move we made a very difficult decision to put our 18 year old cat, Cinder down.  She had been experiencing rapid weight loss and had begun using the entire house as her litter box. The vet did some tests, but had no conclusive answers except old age and her body shutting down.  We knew the 1500 mile trek would do her in, so we held her in our arms as the vet put her to sleep.  We then buried Cinder near her best dog pal Tuppenny.

We have never been long without a pet, but I decided to get on the pug rescue waiting lists, because I wanted a puppy or a young dog to grow up with our grandson. DFW Pug Rescue warned me that we might have a wait, because pug puppies were not that common at the rescue sites, but I filled out the forms anyway. One answer to one question made all the difference for us.  When I answered yes to the question, "Would you be interested in a pug mix?” we received a call within the week.  Toffee's sisters went quickly, because they were more 'pug like' in appearance, but Toffee was still waiting.  When I looked at that face, I couldn't say no.

Toffee is loving and playful. When we are home she doesn't let either of us out of her sight. We did a DNA test of 63 common mixed breeds to see what her daddy may have been, but only got 2 breeds match.  Over 75% of her DNA matched pug (mommy was AKC registered) and less than 10% schnauzer.  This most likely shows that she also had some pug in daddy's family tree, but she has the terrier build and longer muzzle (though she still has a noticeable under-bite). We think she has her own unique look that makes her special and cute.  She came along a lot faster than we were expecting, but she has filled a 4 footed hole in our hearts.
