Bird cage into rat cage?

Well my uncle has a bird cage that he said I could have. I haven't seen it yet, but he said it's a pretty large size- and the bars are close enough that rats can't get out wink

Anyway, it's tall and I was wondering what ideas anyone had for making levels for it. I could use a hammock, but that's the only thing I can think of to use for actually heightening their home Shrug

Any ideas?

I've used a bird cage before, and I've had hammocks as levels. They ratties just used the sides of the cage as the ladder, but you can put a bird ladder in there also. From the top I had hanging bird toys for them to play with. They are really fun and work pretty good as rat cages. You gotta watch them though at first. I had my girls in it at one time and they did some nose dives from the top. What was strange they did it over and over again. Maybe they thought it was fun? I dunno. None of them got hurt one of the hammocks always caught them. The bird cage I had was tall but not much floor space and needed cleaning more often. Other than the nose dives and the cleaning more often it worked as a great cage. wink

Not to mention the girls had a blast running up and down the sides of the cage, LOL. Oh, I also had an igloo in the bottom of the cage. The girls liked to store all their food in there, LOL. Hope I helped.

I bought plastic lids for storage boxes from a DIY place, drilled holes in the edges, and used metal strips with holes in and screws to screw the lids to the sides of the cage. As long as the metal strip is long enough, it will go across two of the wire bars, and hold the lid in place, if you screw it tight enough! You have to measure very carefully, so the lid fits exactly. Another thing you could do is use wire to attach the shelf to the cage.

Other stuff I tried was getting thin pits of plastic coated wood and sliding them through the cage bars.
