Post GB pix

They have become enormous.

Badger being cute

Mary being cute

Louie being cute (note the lack of elbows)

Louie's giant ass

Mary having a pedicure

Mary and Badger being cozy (note the neck rolls on Mary)

Louie showing off her hips

the obligatory tail shot

And finally...

Louie the giant blob

I posted these on the RMCA mouse forum cos there was a thread about obese mice. I think my girls shocked them over there! Mr. Green

There are TONS of cute mouse pix over there, it's wonderful torture to look at them -- everyone gets to cuddle their mice but me, waaaaah!

I'm sure it's not healthy at all. They have trouble walking, to say the least. But there's nothing I can do about it. Shrug I've heard of the fat gene in mice and apparently they have it. I found out later that its more common in brindles and yellows, and that's what they are. When we got them, they were only about two months old and they looked normal. Three days later we had to leave for a long weekend, and Neal who lives downstairs babysat the mice. When we came home four days later, we were shocked to see how HUGE the new girls were. We kept staring at them as if they'd shrink back to normal before our eyes. It was so shocking we didn't know what to think, and I actually asked Neal what he'd been feeding them. Soon after, someone told me about the fat gene. I don't think I've ever seen any animal get that big that fast! And they just kept growing and getting rounder until they were fluffy potatoes with pin heads. Mr. Green

They really are incredibly adorable because of their fatness, but I'd rather they were normal mice, it would be better for them. But I LMAO half the time watching them try to play or run. They're more agile than they look, but occasionally one will do something that backfires due to the blubber, like when Louie made a run for a low shelf and tried to leap up on it, only got her chin and one hand up there, hung for a few seconds with one foot pedalling weakly, then fell over backwards. I almost cried I was laughing so hard at that one. Mr. Green

Their cage has only two levels and the ramp is very shallow -- almost horizontal -- and the bottom is filled with tons of CareFresh to make it easier for them to get around, which they love to burrow in. I even have to place the lower level food dish on the floor and push CareFresh up around it so they can eat without falling in due to the effort of getting their fat necks over the edge of the dish (the upper level dish is more of just a snack tray, very shallow). I experimented a couple times, leaving their dry food unchanged except for checking it for debris, to see how long it takes them to finish it; it took almost five days! They weren't happy, either, cos they'd already ate their favorite bits. But I figured if they were truly pigs they would have polished it off in two days. I also just found some squishy woven vinyl placemats at CVS that I put on the floor of the top level. I am thinking of redoing the ramp to make it turn a corner so that I can make it even more horizontal since they have trouble getting around. I had to remove all tubes from the cage a while back because I was afraid they'd get stuck in them, even the larger mice tubes. The only tube they can fit in is one of those larger-diameter Chubes, and you should see a giant ass sticking out the back of that! LOL

I'm glad they made you laugh, even it it is at their expense. Mr. Green They're as healthy as they can be in their condition, I guess. :)

I'll try to get more shots this week if I can. They'll just look like the last shots, though, huge fuzzy blobs in a pile of CareFresh. LOL

I have no idea what they weigh. I read that a normal adult female mouse weight is about 1.5 - 2 ounces (though that seems rather low) so I gather the GBs are at least 4 ounces each. When I pick up one of them, I can tell I have a weight in my hands, whereas with Yoli, it was like holding air.

Yes, they are more prone to health problems. Age wise, I'd imagine that they're more likely to have health problems that shorten their life span but I don't know if they fundamentally live shorter lives otherwise.

Quote:

do you know why hey are genetically prone to obesity?

The simple answer is they have a gene that predisposes them to obesity. The more complex answer is that these genes affect various functions in the body and metabolism so they gain weight more than others.

Kate I told you about that red gene a while back..they are adorable but they do have shorter life spans, and are prone to CHF, and usually their litters are small and they become sterile after two litters. Deffinatly potatoes with legs...god I miss my copper penny....she was the start of my chocolate broken marked mice, which do not carry the red gene anymore, so I dont have any fat potatoe mice.. There she goes again. LOL

Sadly, there is only one GB left, Badger. I won't be taking many more pix of her because she has a huge tumor and it's very ugly, and to get a shot without it in the pic is difficult. To get a shot of her at all has always been difficult cos she's so shy, but now she spends almost all of her time sleeping in various spots on the lowest cage level, under the bedding. She's doing well for having such a big tumor -- all she does is eat and sleep. She even lets me scritch her ears now, so it probably won't be long til I have to take her in for her last vet visit. But she gets MANY yogies a day since it no longer matters, and a bite of potato chip once in a while, and I hand-feed her often so she doesn't have to get up much. I guess I must check her at least 5 times a day, and I've been up in the middle of the night countless times with a flashlight just to look in on her too, if it seems too quite in there (I can usually hear her shredding paper towels every couple nights or so). As soon as I can tell she's not feeling well I'll take her in, but she's been pretty enthusiastic about her food all along, and still is, so I just wait and watch, and stuff her with yogies. :)

If I can get a decent shot of her I will. She doesn't move around much so I might be able to get a face shot, though half the time when she sees me, she squints. LOL
