Post Names for Rats

i've seen so many names for all the ratties here and i got to wondering how people came up with them. what made you decide that that was what you were going to call your rat? is there any specail meaning behind the name or did it just sound pretty? is there a story on how your rat got his name?

i'll start off with telling you the reason i named my rats what i named them.

my first rat was Pocket but that wasn't what i wanted her name to be in the beginning. one of the reason her name ended up changed was becasue i couldn't figure out how to spell the name i originally wanted for her and becasue i couldn't pronounce it teh same everytime because iw as trying to figure out which way it was spelt. the meaning for the first name was what the three-headed dog that gaurded the gates of the underworld for Hades was called. you might know what i was trying to get at now. I ended up calling her Pocket however because that's where she liked to stay. I used to take her to school with me adn around town and she would sit in my pocket for the most of it. didn't matter wear the pocket was either so sometimes i had to be careful when i was walking.

i picked up a friend for her after i learned that rats can go through depression if they didn't ahve company and i wasn't able to take her out as often as i could before when my son was born adn i finished school. i named her buddy Lyiint to go with Pocket. so now i had Pocket Lyiint. (and yes i know it should be spelled lint but i needed a 6 letter password and i was thinking of lyiint at the time *shrugs*)

because i liked have pairs named so that the word could together after that i named my next two Dust and Myght so now i had pocket lyiint and dust myght. (i know that it should be splet mite but i decided that if i was going to call a rat after a bug i should at least give her a neat and different way of spelling it.)

then came Nazumi (should be spelt nEzumi but mom got in the habit of calling her with an a instead of it sounding with an e so when i came here to talk about her i misspelled it and it's stuck since) She was a rescue from a neighbor's and they were calling her rat, snake food, or critter, all very undeginifed names so me being the geek i am and reading way too many fanfics i've learned a few japanese words and named her Nezumi (just i spell it with an a so it probably means something different) which means rat but it sounds prettier.

next is spider and snicketts. they were SUPPOSED to be Spider and Webb but mom insisted on calling one snicketts (it actually used to be her nickname for dust. she called myght Lemony for the longest time too...) and dad though naming a rat Webb wasn't going to go over too well with his side of the family with his mom afriad of rats. so this is why we're not telling her that there's a couple babies named after her and her husband here! LOL

the 24 babies: i wanted to name them all after my family from ripples but we couldn't remeber all the names and there wasn't enough names anyway so i decided i wanted to name them all old style farmmy names. so now we have: Emma, Ella, Erma, Lois, Vesta, Dawn, Estelle, Wallace, Percivile(Percy), Archibald(Archie), Lyman, Bartholemew(Bart), Inez, Lydia, Gloria, Squirm (his name jumped out at me when i picked him up so he's the exception to the theme), Edith, Emmett, Hector, Warren, Horse, Clyde and Deuteronmy(Deuter)(also and exception to the rule becasue mom wanted to name one)

so what about you? what stories are behind your names and did you pick them for the meaning or just cause they were pretty? or both?

Like I was looking through rat names and I liked the names Autumn,Blizzard, and Petunia and I named my sweetheart brown girl Autumn and my sweet berkshire Midnight because she was my fave and all the good comedy central shows come on at that time and also she was black! I named Cole because he reminded me of my sister n laws rat couscous. which later became mine..so in a way I just wanted to remember him and Cole is black like Coal...but I spelt it differantly.. The I was working at our annual haunted house...there was this guy who acted as frankenstien...he was great and a riot...his acctual name was Merlin....so when my magical little black and white squish came into my life just after the haunted house...I named him Merlin..then after Merlin I was at a pet shop and saw this rat that looked identical to merlin...after holding her for about 10 seconds she bit me...then I saw her daughter black and shiney with that beautiful white face...I bought her and didnt name her right away. I was originaly going to call her Martha..I dont know why. Then we were headed to wausau which is about 60 miles away..I was sleeping then just sat up and blurted out Magic!! Its only fitting...Then there is Peaches, I wanted to call her squishy because she seemed squishy and nekkid...I left her with mom while I went shopping for toys..I came back and mom said her name is Peachy Peaches...then added that is the color she wanted to paint her kitchen...so Peaches she is..now Sergent...when she was three hours old and the runt of the liter I was worried about her...but 24 hours old she was teh loudest and had teh fullest belly...my comment was oh your loud and bossy!! Sergent just stuck my dad shortened it to Sarge because after all she is a girl.. my sister in law named Buddah because she wants her rat to have a buddah like Merlin...the rest I gave generic names to because I couldnt just call them rat1 2 3 and so forth...so Peaches babies are...Lily, Apricot, Serenity, Sergent for girls and Daniel, Squeek, Aidan, Buddah, Guido, Dusty, and Dustin..my twin white rex boys. Ruby got her name because of how bright ruby colored her eyes are...Jasmine just stuck in my head for the rex veriberk, then theres Haven, and Raven my all black rex girl...the rest so far dont have names were working on it though...Sorry for the long post..lol Shaz

Sounds silly to some people, but mine all told me their names (or at least agreed to them) to some extent....

Charlie - called Charlie because he's a Cheeky Charlie.
Finn - my precious Huggleberry Finn (which obviously is a play on Huckleberry Finn) because he was always a super snuggly boy.
Malachi - he's a bit of a sneaky one, is Mal. He used to challenge Charlie for Alpha spot, so then Charlie would put the smackdown on him... at which point he'd come running to me crying and grizzling to get some sympathy... He kind of reminded me of a roleplay character that my flatmate plays by the name of Malachi, hence the name.
Azrael - I've always loved the name since watching The Smurfs as a little girl, and for some reason it suited Az (though he's neither a ginger fleabitten moggie nor the Angel of Death).
Newton & Darwin - I always said I'd get a couple of black and white boy cats called Crick and Watson (after the co discoverers of the structure of DNA) and never have... so I decided a couple of black and white boy rats would be fine instead... however, by next two boys (unlike the previous 4) weren't black and white, so I had to pick two other science names. I decided to settle on Newton and Darwin for them... however, they clearly aren't their real names - Newton is known as Monkey by everyone, and Darwin is Baby (or Wonky because of his head tilt). So they've made clear what their real names are. wink
Maisie - I took one look at my dumbo rex smeeze girl, and the name Maisie just leapt into my head. There was no thought behind it. It was just her name. I've only known one Maisie in my life (who was the old lady who lived next door) and it's never been a name I would normally consider, so I don't know why it popped up other than it just was her name.
Ella - When I got the two girls, Maisie had been in the store for 6 weeks and no-one wanted her because she "looked funny" with her rumply fur and different ears and smudgy nose and butt. She'd been moved in with Ella's litter who were a couple of weeks younger than her so that she wasn't on her own... well Ella ran up to me when I reached in to pick out Maisie, so she came home with me as her buddy. Ella just seemed to suit her really, and one of the meanings is "beautiful" which is apt as she's got a very pretty little face, even for a rat. wink But it can get a bit muddled at times because my flatmate's mum has a German Shepherd called Ellie. LOL

I named Finn because I just liked the name and it seemed Ratty - then we were trying to figure out other names and we were watching Law & Order so Munch came to be, courtesy of my boyfriend. (Finn and Munch are the detectives played by Richard Belzer and Ice T). We called the white one (the only white one) Raymond because everybody loves Raymond and he was special cuz he was the only white one (he's a bit of a scaredy-weiner-whiner too, which fits hehe). The last one we named Scout because he was the first one to explore his cage although now it seems like that should have been Munch's name because Munch is always trying to get out of his cage and explore!!! :)

Oreo was named by my 4 year old....once again after a sort of candy/cookie! and so then fell Hershey right into place as a sweet tooth family! Sphinx just reminded my of the Sphinx in Egypt! Perfect and mysterious in all ways bless his soul....... Templeton and Splinter came named, after Ninja turtles and charolettes web!

Lily (R.I.P.)- She had a white stomach (berkshire) and I thought it was like a pretty lily! LOL
Angel (R.I.P.)- She was such a sweetie pie and I though it was a cute name at the age of 10
Mickers- I liked the name Mickey (after a mouse, duh, how original am I? Rolling Eyes ), but it just didn’t fit him. So somehow Mickers came in…
PeBo- I was first going to call him Amigo because he was a rusty charcoal and somehow looked Mexican and his big dumbo ears looked like a sombrero. He was my little “friend” too. Again, I honestly don’t know where I got “PeBo”. Has anyone heard it from somewhere?
Cosby- Rolling Eyes I’m hopeless! I don’t know where I came up with Cosby. I was just messing with names one day and somehow it came up. He is such a funny little guy too and most definitely a star. wink
Oliver- I think I got him the day after I went to see “Oliver!” at the Paramount Theatre. I also just adore that name. lurve
Milo- Well some of you might know that Milo is the best chocolate milk drink in Australia (where I am from) and its from the movie “Milo and Otis”. (I’ll have to name a rat Otis some day….)
Chewey- Well honestly, I got her to breed with Cosby and BORROW originally. She came with that name. I ended up keeping her of course and she has most DEFINITELY lived up to the name. Blink
Darla- From “The Little Rascals”. My mom kept insisting she didn’t like it because she always thought of the “evil” little girl from “Finding Nemo”. But of course, she ended up being Mom’s favorite.
Piccolo- Kind of a long story. But making it short, the little 4-year-old up the street is somehow obsessed with the word “Piccolo”. She wants to name EVERYTHING piccolo and naturally its her favorite word. I started to grow on the name and decided it was perfect for petite little Piccolo. J
Mona (R.I.P.)- I always loved that name too, like the Mona Lisa. She was so pretty.
Trooper (R.I.P.)- I think most of you know his story (he was a rescue after being abandoned for a month), and I just thought he was such a trooper after all that he’d been through. (Now I realize though, isn’t it spelled “trouper”? Oops. Embarassed )

Wow that’s a lot…..

Matt and I layed in bed throwing out names to each other. We didn't exclusively look for "human" names, but they just seemed to fit better for our girls. Amelia was the easiest to name because it sounds like a flower to me, and she reminds me of a flower (I'm sure I couldn't explain why... she just does). I've always liked the name Savannah (I'm sure it has something to do with "Prince of Tides") and she's just such a layed back southern girl, so it fit her nicely.

Maggie and Sydney were meant to be little kid names, really... and it just so happened we ended up with the most kid-like (read: goofy) ratties ever! Sydney is Syd or Sydders most of the time and Maggie ends up being Magpie, which I think expresses their strange little personalities even more precisely.

A lot of the time they're just "the girls" though :).

The aliens tell me what to name the rats!!! Ok, not exactly, but I just seem to have a random weird pop cultural name generator in my brain that enables me to name my poor animals after obscure comic book characters (Lobster Johnson), friends' screen names (the late Mallomar Parkingmeter), DJ's (Keoki and Tiesto to name a few), weird literary characters (Fenris Ulf from the Narnia Chronicles), movie characters (One-Eyed Willie and Viggo) and food (Orzo, Darjeeling and Noodle.) I also like pretty human female names for my pretty ladies: Gemma, Esme, Flora, Chloe, Vivian, Beatrice etc.

After naming our 15 rabbits, coming up with names for 4 kids, 3 dogs, 2 cats, and trying to come up with duck names...heck, i'm all named out. Confused
Anyone have any suggestions for ducks I'm all ears! Anyway, it was really my hubby's idea to come up with alcohol names for the rattie babies. Whiskey(rip) was named after Jack Daniels my fave drink with pop when I was younger and childless. We had to have a Bourbon then. I could not in good conscience call them Jack and Jim...my best friend's dog is named Jack (he's a jack russel and her name is Jill...get it jack and jill???) Guiness and Bass were named so because of their colors. Guiness is dark, and Bass is light...there is a drink that my hubby used to drink...a dark and tan which was guiness and bass put together, but it won't mix it will stay seperated, hence the name. I got Ouzo from someone on the forum as I couldn't think of any more alcohol, and Saki because I was thinking Smirnoff at first...Saki tastes like Tequila and Vodka mixed together Yuck But I like how they sounded. My next rats...oh yes getting more rats will be named oriental themed names I think....I must really get more into my origins! LOL

Oh, we also did holiday names this year! Tsimmes and Elijah arrived on Passover and thus got Pesach related names. Tsimmes means "fuss" but it's also a type of casserole dish that is often eaten in Jewish homes. I made a tsimmes this year as one of the Passover dishes and it seemed a perfect name for our wild and crazy little girl. She also got to taste some of that dish and liked it a lot.

At Passover, you leave the door open for Elijah to enter and make a plate for him. This year, we actually had Elijah join us for a change!! So he wasn't a bearded old prophety looking guy, he was a fuzzy little rat guy - worked for us! I also discovered that rats like matzoh (a type of cracker) and haroset (a compote made from apples and honey and nuts and wine) quite a bit but are not so wild about horseradish.

My first ratty darlin was called Pandora. I have no idea why and I never called her Pandora. She was mainly known as Fatty McRatterson or Ratty McLardbott!
Now I have Sylvia (after sylvia plath) and Darcy (after smashing pumpkins bassist). They are mainly known as the laaadiiies! It must be said in a cheesy disco voice though!

That is a tough one. I still believe that each rattie gave us their name. Soozie was originally called Sally. I am absolutely sure she didn't like that name. Soozier kept being whispered in my ear.

Obviously Ben didn't have a choice. I saw two little men rats and had to call them Ben and Jerry. Two of my three favorie men. When Jerrie died, Ben became Gentle Ben. He looks like a big grizzly in mineature.

bonbon came with the name. her mother was named godiva and the person i got her from wanted to keep the theme going.

sachi was because i wanted a japanese name. most of her siblings have "s" names and when i saw the meaning of sachi, it just fit even tho i hadn't even met her yet. (sach means happiness or child of bliss)

celia chose her own name. she was nicknamed "nubs" because she has no fingers. when she came to me she told me she hated that name and asked if she could be called celia.

Our girls have Celtic themed names and our boys are after Lord of the Ring characters.

Haggis, our first one that started off this batch of ratties was named after a Celtic rock band that my daughter is friends with, "Enter the Haggis". Our 2nd girl, Lanigan was named after one of their songs. When the other girlies came along, none of the names from the band really fit so we decided to keep it Celtic names in general.

Macha (Macha Monkey or just Monkey) and Taillte are names of Scots/Irish queens, Orla was an Irish princess name, and Dalriada (Dalri) and Tir na nOlg (Tirna) are Irish place names. They are known collectively as" the Girls" or "the Ladies" and the 3 youngest ones are "The Bambinas". Macha told me her name almost as soon as we got her and Orla told me hers soon after.

We got most of the boys during the release of the 2nd and 3rd LOTR movies. Since we were really into it, all the boys got names from Tolkien.
My first boy started it all. He was incrediably agile and acrobatic, so that's why he was named Legolas (Leggy). Then came my 2 rexy rescue boys. They are so dignified and brave Rolling Eyes wink that they got kingly names, Elessar (Elly, or Elly Buddha Belly) and Theoden (Theo or Theoden King) then came Isildur. It took forever to name him because he told me his name was Issy and I really wanted him to have a LOTR name, so after a long while we compromised. He's "Isildur" when he gets in trouble for beating up on his cagemate and "Issy" when he's a good boy being spoiled rotten. Mr. Green Our last boy is Faramir He just seemed like a "Faramir" and probably would have been even if we didn't have an LOTR theme.

The ratties I had in the past were: Misha, she was named after the ballet dancer Baryshnikov; Amadeus (Dae-Dae) he was named after the composer; and Lenny who was an older rehomed boy that was named after 2 people from Star Trek, Leonard McCoy and Leonard Nimoy.

We also have a sub-theme in names doh "Rex" in Latin means king/queen = royalty.
Since Elly and Theo have king names and are rexes, we decided that when we got Macha and Taillte who are rexes, they would have queen names. It seemed like the right thing to do, since Macha had already picked out a queenly name for herself Mr. Green .
So, any rexes we get in the future will also be named after kings and queens.

Isn't funny how much we get into naming our companions?

Not just the Canadians Mr. Green !! I got Canadian tv stations while I was living near Detroit. Polkaroo was a cute lil bugger.
Here's an OT question for ya: Do you get alot of American coins floating around like we do w/ Canadian coins??
ok back on topic...
I had a list of a few tree/plant names to choose from before I got my girlies and then when I got them I decided which name belonged to whom. So I have Bonsai who is very energetic and playful (makes me think Bonzai!!). Then there's Willow, who is more laid back and independant. If I get more rats I think I will stick w/ the theme if I can come up w/ names that fit both the theme and thier personalities.
Oh and PS, Did I mention that I love the Goonies? hahaha truffle shuffle....

after running through name pairs( i got both my babies at the same time ans wanted two names that would go together)My whole family sat through dinner and the ride home after dinner trying to come up with a cute name pair. (Thing Siskel and Ebert, Thelma and Louise, etc.) I was hoping for something clever, and my boyfriend thought of Tara, which is "a rat" backwards. Then I thought of Star, which is "rats" backwards. I thought it was cute, and it stuck. If I hadn't chosen Tara and Star, it would have been Tira and Misu, but my boyfriend's dad thought of it too late.

Post Rattie names
I named my first one Templeton after the rat in Charlotte's Web (the only rat I "knew")

My daughter suggested I name the second one Pettigrew after some character in the Harry potter books that can become a rat (Ithink, I've never red HP books)

I named Squiggy becuse she just reminded me of a Squiggy (Princess Diana's nickname.) She was very pretty, friendly and affectionate. Plus she wanted out of that cage!

Then came two adopted babies she to care of. I called them prince William and Prince Harry (what else) except that "Harry" turned out to be a girl, so I changed it to Harriet.

Next came two pet store rescues --Ratrat (a name he already answered to) and Lazarus -- bought Good Friday as the last two rats at the store (good as dead -- snake feeders) saved from death.

The others are all bought from Eric as examples of coat and color types.

Females -Chocolate -- Lady Godiva. Champagne or fawn rex -- Ferggie-- Champagne or fawn female -- Scarlett.

Males-- blue velvet -- Bluebeard. Black silver-- Jack Black (reputed to be the first person to sell rats as pets as well as catch them to be used in rat baiting.

Black verigated by Thane --- Macbeth, Thane of Cordor. Lambkin-- color pointed rex, called a lambkin by some fanciers.

Adopted black hooded female companion for Squiggy -- Sweetie or Sweet pea because she is so sweet.

So some got their names because of color and or coat. Some because of personality and some because of association with humans they reminded me of.

I love the name Trippetta.I got it out of a storie called Hop Frog by Edgar Allan Poe.It's my favorit storie that he wrote.Trippetta was a beutiful dwarf servant girl to a rude king and his seven wise men.She helps Hop Frog (a crazed, cripple, dwarf of a jest/fool) kill the king and wise men then run away back to where they came.

I wish I had some fabulous story about how I selected my ratties names....But alas I don't.

Almost all of my names were just custie names I thought would fit. I have kept a few names that Lynn already gave them before I got them from her. Like Kameo and Kai (hawaiian names for the chosen one and sea). Suzie was orginally names Peggy Sue (song title litter) and I renamed her Suzie Q (staying with the same theme).

Porter kept his name too. He and his brother Pilsner (now Polo) were named after beers, thanks to Lynn.

Venus was prenamed. And Lynn named our wonderful little Dexter. (story behind his name was that before we rescued him, he was tortured by an evil man that sprayed him with winDEX and tried to drown him).

Everyone else were just names I came up with.

I have always wanted to get 4 boys and name them Eddie, Alex, Michael and Sammy. Hubby blew my chance at that with the last 4 boys...he refused to let me rename HIS rattie Porter. Sad .

A lot of my rats are or were named after music references:
Antony*, Beck*, Corgan*, Coyne*, Cuomo*, Doughty*, Fiona, Gavin*, Janine, Jonas*, Lucy, Langdon*, Lennon*, Madeleine, Marietta, Ruby Vroom, Yoshimi, and Yorke*

Several others are named after authors, playwrights or characters in books/plays/films/poems/TV shows:
Arwen, Basil, Beckett*, Estragon, Faust, Goldmund, Julian*, Lucas, Legolas*, Lovinia*, Poe*, Providence*, Puck*, Rosshalde, Tamora, Tolkien, Thunderclees* and Vladimir

Some rats came with their names:
Ben*, Bippo*, Catori (now Kitty), Colton, Catfood*, Dolly, Dash*, Ilori, Lucky*, Phineas, Tully and Talulah*

And some just fit them:
Adrian*, Caleb, Cooper, Calla*, Devi, Elliot, Freya, Geisha, Ira, Jasmine, Nigel, Noah, Owen*, Starling, Theo, Wren and Wyrick

I also just realized that 65 rats have shared their lives with me...all the ones about with an asterix (*) have passed on. I feel very, very honored to have loved and named so many ratties :*)

well let's see.... i actually have a baby name book that i use A LOT plus several web sites with gaelic names, plus a note book where i jot down random word/thoughts that would make neat names, plus a list of characters from books that i've read (it's a veeeeeeeeeeeeeery long list! wink )

raven and dove- named after birds, raven black, dove blue
opal- my pew girl.... it's seemed to fit, and the color was right!
faith- she picked me, and picked her name, also....
fern- my agouti girl, very earthy and sweet, then there's also the charlotte's web thing!

the boys started out on a "children's book" theme
templeton- duh
wodney- named after the children's book "hooway for wodney wat!"
charlie- charlie and the chocolate factory... one of my all time favorite books! i can't wait for the new movie to come out!!!! (johnny depp **swoon**)
linus- fit with charlie.... ya know... from charlie brown... some day i'll have a pigpen, too!
vale- david named him
zen- he picked his name... i ran through a ton of random names trying them out loud. i'd find one that i really liked, but it just didn't stick. he was sleeping in the crook of my neck one day, and zen just popped into my head, and staid!

then there are the boys we're getting from eric.... i went back to my gaelic theme for their names!
earcán- our new veriberk guy... means little speckled one (i wanted to use it for a merle great dane, but thought it would work well for him!)
cian- first time i saw his picture, i knew i had to have him! his name means ancient
tadhg- my very first rex! i'm so excited! his name means poet
liam- i've always loved loved loved the name! it means strong protector

For my rats most of them agreed to their names, sounds weird but its true...

My first two a PEW and an agouti hooded, it didn't take long for Pudge to get her name she was a rather large (yes -fat-) rat it took me nearly all the 5 days before she spawned Mr. Green for me to realise she was preggers.... I do believe she was -smirking- when I named her! wink

Zippo was more of a challenge, she just was -everywhere- she responds better to Zipper, but we affectionatly call her Zipperhead, Zipperbutt, The Mighty White One and Mighty Whitey....

Pudge birthed 9 baby ratties (wish I coulda kept em all, they were very cute and I do miss them) I ended up keeping 3, 2 agouti berks and a silvered fawn hooded... For Pudge, like Zippo, has the -other- names of Pudgers and Pudgewidgit... Sometimes refered to as The Skinny One :P

The boyfriend named his berk Shadow, simply cuz she loves playing in his shadow and all over his chair... I don't think she likes me very much, specially with the weekly check up I do...

My berk Precious I think -really- likes it when I watch Lord of the Rings.... Occasionally I am prone to hacking out "My Precious, My Love, My Own"... Her nicknames range from Precious Angel, to Buddah Belly, Bellysome, Fat Rat, Squealer and Quititsillyhead! LOL

Nanners is a name everyone loves, her lovely fawny and white body, petite looks it took a long time before I found the "right" name.... I was actually staring at her trying to decide while eating some.... Banana cream pie pudding.... I know sounds strange but the name Nanners lept out, so we call her Nannerypoo, Nannas Baby and just plain Nannas and Nanners... Tho she deserves the name Nighteyes the Desecrator! Twisted Evil wink Nanners is usually the one I will find who will -slowly- tear things up usually quite noisesome cardboard just when I'm about to drift off into dreamworld too.... My fault for giving them boot boxes! :P

Rats that are gone:

Gus- I always liked this name for a rat. We were told she was a boy but after I found out she was a girl I just called her Gussy and it fit very well.

Gizmo- He reminded me me of a gremlin.

Obidiah/Obi- My friend named him. It's a great rat name.

Zander- He named himself as soon as I first met him. I always called him Zander baby. I miss him. He had such a short life.

My current rats:

Mason- When he came to live with me he named himself, it just fit perfectly.

Serj- It's different and I like names that are different. The lead singer of my fiance's favorite band is names Serj so that's how we came up with it. If fits great though because he's so quick and loves speeding around.

Silus- He was the hardest to name. He didn't have a name for a long time. After a while I thougt Silus was good for him and I've liked that name for a long time.

I am a firm believer that the critters tell *you* their name... You know when you think of names, but none "fit", but suddenly you think of something and it fits perfectly, I like saying it's them telling you, and they smile and nod when at last you get it right! hehehehe!

My first rat was called Izzy from the rats of NIMH books
My second was called Ebony Eyes, or just Ebony. For obvious reasons (she was an agouti hooded)
My first boy was called Whiskas, because all I saw of him at the SPCA was his huge whiskers poking out the cage at me
Taz and Joey the brothers had been called Simon and Phill by their old owners, but they renamed themselves, I don't know why I named them that, I just did! (they told me! hehe)
Scamp told me his name in the pet shop before I'd even bought him. I was watching him do mad antics to sniff my finger, and kept calling him a wee scamp...
Possum reminded me so much of a possum, he still does.
Shade, I dunno, I was thinking of 'dark' things, because he's black, like shadow and dappled sunlight with his spots and stuff, and "shade" cropped up and I swear a bell went off or something, it fits him so well, and I have no idea why!!
Skie, same again, I don't know why I called her that, but every time I looked at her and thought of names, only "s" names came to me... she seemed to insist it started with "S"! hehehe! I thought of Sky, and it was so close. It sounded right but didn't look right... I dunno, but we settled on Skie, pronounced the same as Sky...

My first rat is name Ash(ee) because her fur is black and white..... and that makes grey, ash came to my mind

Next was Ben... because he was badddddddddddddddd!

Then Blue... well he is blue :)

Then one day out of the blue, I wanted some gold fish.... so my dad took me to the petstore and I looked at the rats.. There was a pretty fawn hooded one... I wanted to see it if was male or female, and the lady said no... she had the nerve to tell me I would drop it and cost 100's dollars worth of damage.. After a few minutes, the rat came over and it was a girl.. I took her home and on the way... I introduced myself.... An then I saw it.... it was a sign to name her... really.. Sassafrass St.. So now I have Sassy.

Jo-Jo was named because I was watching the end of Sargent Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band.... (Sings in head.. Get back..)

Last for now is my new baby... Head Spot.... Named because he is the first rat I have had with a hea sopt.. lol... I have more if you want me to continue...... just ask....

I'm with FD, my critters pretty much named themselves or 'agreed' to a name that fit....

My boy Gollum got named for a terrible sneeze unfortunatly but it just sounded right for him, he is also a squirm master when it comes to dispensing of the meds, ends up with more on his face than in his mouth...
My other boy Nazgul had been called Nicodemus... But it didn't 'fit' and I tried out a few but when I said to my boyfriend "I love how they did the Nazgul in the movies" the rat ran to the top of the boys domicile.... So Nazgul it is! :)

My girl Pudge got stuck with that name cuz she was so huge with eepers in her belly that I didn't know existed.... She's now the most skinny active rat, an avid wheel runner....
Zippo got that one for her zipping actions all over the big cage...
Shadow because thats where she hangs out, in her rat slaves shadow...
Nanners simply cuz she looks like a banana cream pie pudding cup....
Spaz never sits still unless shes sleeping or eating....

My last 3 got 'accidentally' named cuz I can sometimes do quite credible impressions....

Precious I did call her "My precious, my love, my own..." in a Gollum like voice one day, she loves it when I do this...
Poppet was called Pikachew by her previous owner, but I had her, Spaz and Savvy in the playpen for a bit everyone was hiding under the blanket and I lean over and just say "I know your 'ere Poppet" and she is the first one out from under the covers....
Savvy never answered to anything, guess she didn't like my choices... So I shot words at the cage at wierd intervals and she picked out Savvy when I was actually watching Pirates of the Caribbean....

Thats all my critters, but the last 3 amaze me.... I sometimes catch Spaz watching the moving objects on the TV... I'll asume she can see them, its the only other time I've caught her sitting still enough to snap a pic of.... I think she likes CSI... LOL

I guess I have a weird way of naming my rats...usually I hold them, and completely clear my mind, until its just blank. Then I let thoughts slowly creep back in, and the first name thats there is usually the name I use. I feel like they know what they want to be called, they're just communicating it to me. Sometimes it happens instantly, the second I hold the rat I feel like the name is screaming in my head. Sometimes it comes more slowly, over a period of time. Sometimes the names are really silly, so I'm sure its just my subconcious throwing random things out.
I'm probably just weird and imagining it, but whatever. That method works well for me. Mr. Green

So for that reason I can't really say why I choose a name or the significance of it...you'll have to ask the rats that I suppose. wink

So, I've got: Oh Ratigan, Gruesome Grue, Grimace Skullface (Or, Grim the Executioner :P) King Cupcake (Prince of Pastries,) Cyclus Cyclone, Muffin Man, Shaolin, Little Lottie, Eloin, Nelwyn, Cartha Catana, Lani Lazuli, and Cossette. Shrug

Post Re: Why reason that you give they an names?
This is fun. It has been done before, but I love telling about names.
Rosie -- Husband named her. He gave no reason.
Boo -- Named after the little girl on Monster's Inc. Becase she needed a name.
Skooter and Smokie -- They were so close in looks that we wanted the names to relate to their speed and color (blaack).
Ben & Jerry -- At that point they were two of my three favorite men. I love my Ben.
Soozie -- She came to us as Sally but she didn't like that name and told me she wanted to be named Soozie.
Dexter and Galloway -- Named by Lynn at ROUS. They recognized those names so we kept them.

Zelda Princess Rat~ Princess Zelda on the "Zelda" video game.
Princess Leia ~ Princess Leia "Star Wars"

Piper Monkey~ searched for names online that might work. then had my fiancee pick. I came up with it because Piebald is the color of a white and black horse. and Piper is white and black. the monkey because she'd hang from the top of the aquarium when she was a littleun.

Lyric Bean~ again looking online for names I saw Lyric and it was perfect. Bean came along I dunno why cause it was something I said and it fit. kinda like Coffee Bean. lol

Emma~ plain and simple. When GraceJR showed me the adoption pics of Emma and her sisters. I looked at hers the FIRST thing that came to mind was "Emma" and i knew she was for me.

Dare: it started off as a joke. When I got her she was very skittish and would hide. Now that she's a little older she's the explorer of the group and will take on any situation!

Nerissa: it means sea nymph. It fits her perfectly because she's so tiny and blue Heart

Kina: i've just always loved this name so it fit well with my favorite girl. Mr. Green

Cessi: also kind of a joke. When I was younger my friends and I would always says "oooh that's sessi [sexy]" and Cessi is a hairless...most people don't think she is very "sessi". LOL

Like I said in the thread that Little Willow pointed out, our 7 girls names have a Celtic theme (Scots/Irish) and 6 of our boys are named after characters fromm J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Ring series.

I let the ratties know what the "theme" is and they tend to pick out their own names from the theme. It's kind of funny. Sometimes I really want a specific name for a rat, but it just won't stick or seem right and a name pops into my head from nowhere that absolutely works! They are persistant little buggers when it comes to choosing their own names. LOL

Our newest girl took forever to name, but we came up with the name Fainne (FAWN yuh) together. With our 2 new boys from Kim's Ark Rescue, the baby, semi-nekkid boy picked Ori even though I wanted to name him Gandalph. The older boy was already named O'Connor. He responds to it very well so we just decided to keep it. He's had enough change and upheaval in his life without loosing his name Shrug. At least it's still a Celtic name wink

Most of my rats picked out their own names:
Damion-After Damion Thorn in the Omen series(son of the devil)
Target -because she's all black except for a white circle on her stomach with a black dot in the center that looks like a Target
Stormy- because she has severe mood swings
Nimbus-cause he's like a dark cloud-with a silver lining
Zea-Zea-cause we were watching a show and the kids name was Ze-Ze..and she kept "chirupping" whenever his name was said
Shashi-means moon or moonbeam and it just seemed to fit her
Gavan-means white hawk and he was the only one out of the boys who was white
Tynan-means The Dark One which seemed to fit cause he's half black and is always getting into trouble
and last but not least:
Eros- the Greek god of love- he was named that cause he's a total love bug..even from 2 weeks old
I think that most of the time rats pick out their own names, even though the ones they pick out may not have been your first choice :wiley:

Well, of the 13 I have right now 8 of them I adopted so I they already have names. There's Lilah, Raine, Honey, Joplin, Amadeus, Sebastian, Cupcake, and Brently. I have a thing about not changing animals names unless I really can't stand them :).
I named Cheyenne because that is what came to me a week after I got her. Of the other four girls two were also adopted, but had no names. I've had them for about a month and haven't gotten anything out of them. Usually when I get an animal I don't have names picked out. I just let it come to me. I'll be playing with them or something and a name will just pop into my head.

We just recently got infected with GGMR and GGMM this past month.

Rats:
We got our very first two rats almost three weeks ago.
We have a spice theme going on with the rats.

Salt - because she's white.
Pepper - because she's dark brown.
My six year old named them. Salt and Pepper aren't very feminine names, but they are very fitting.
Ginger - just seemed to fit. She's Salt and Pepper's mother, but she just came to us three days ago. Her name was Amy, but we the previous owner told us we could rename her. My sons and I went through all the spices we had in the pantry to get the perfect name for her. She almost became Paprika and then Sesame, but Ginger was the one that won out. Her fawn coloring even looks like the color of ground ginger.

Mice:
We got the first two mice three weeks ago. We got their two sisters yesterday from Serendipity.

Amelia - My son has a friend name Amelia and likes the way it sounds.
Emily - My son went to school with an Emily. It goes well with Amelia.
Cinnamon - He decided on that when we were looking through the spices for Ginger's name.
Shimmer - He named her this as a favor to me. I really like the name Shimmer. I originally asked him to name her Moxy, but he didn't like that one very much. Just as well - Shimmer doesn't have a lot of moxy compared to Emily and Cinnamon. She does shimmer, though.

Post Fould out what a poll is!
Well, now that Ive fould out what a poll is( Mr. Green ) I can finally bring this thought up: Lately , I have been wondering if I should get another rattie, and my answer was yes, but I didnt know when I would be able to adopt one. And in my spare time, I got to thinking what this ratties name should be. For fun, and for the future, I have decided to let you guys choose for me, I just cant decide! I dont know ifI'm going to get a boy or a girl, so the names are that way. Some of them could be for either! So, you decide. wink ( just to warn you, some of the names are sorta...odd :) !)

Why don't you wait to see what names fit your ratties. A lot of rats do that. You have a name all picked out that you absolutely love, and it totally doesn't match. Then a name that you would have never picked pops into your head and it fits perfectly. Most of the time the rats will tell you their names. Crazy rodents..lol..

I always wait and see what suits them when I get them. I've never successfully named a critter before I've seen them (and often, not till I've got to know them a bit) - they always end up going by some other name instead... Shrug

I was thinking of Danika but wanted to put a twist. Whenever I tell people my rats names I get the wtf look. Shrug I like odd and misspelled names.

My ultimate goal is to have a boy rattie one day and name him Tahrick [tear-rick]. :) I'm done.

My girl, Tryxie, went 3 days with no name. I finally decided on Tryxie because she is so fast, she's a 'trixy hobbit' as Gullum would say, so don't feel bad if you don't come up with a name right away. I am glad I waited because it really fits her. wink

Sometimes it takes forever for the right name to come to you and others can be named instantly. My 2 black and white hooded girls took a couple of months to name! Each week they would "try on names" that didn't really seem to fit, then we would try two more. *sigh* Such a hard business, naming our babies. Rolling Eyes wink

3 totally made up names came to me when I looked at her pics. Don't know if you'll like them or not but here they are:

Teepo

Alysandia

Afaeriya

Good luck with her and don't forget to post more pics of her!

Eve and Holly sound good. wink But I'd wait until you get them to make them official. Before I got rats I wrote a whole list of names for them, and didn't end up using any of them because it just didn't fit them. You could wait until you get them to name them, just incase the names don't fit the personality.

Post Name change?
I have had my boys for about 4 weeks now. I named them, but the names just don't feel right. Would it be wrong to change their names now? And i don't know what to name them. Unfortunately i don't know how to put pics on the computer but one is very tiny for his age and he is chincilla brown colored (ventures alot & far, very brave, annoys his bigger brother by always stepping & jumping on him) and the other boy is russian blue hooded (lazy, more frightened, not as brave as the other). Both are very sweet mama's boys) Any ideas? I can give more info about their personality if needed. Thank you so much in advance for any suggestions. I don't want to wait too long if i change their names.

Post RE: Name change?
I am a very firm believer that rats pick their on names. Take my pair Newton and Darwin, for example. I always swore that I'd get a couple of black and white boy cats one day, and call them Crick and Watson, after the two guys that discovered the structure of DNA. However, I realised it wasn't going to happen any time soon, so I decided that when I got my next two black and white boy RATS, I'd call them, Crick and Watson. However, when I did get my next two, they weren't black and white. So I decided to go for a couple of other scientists instead.

Unfortunately, it became evident to me pretty fast that, despite being called Newton, he was most definitely Monkey. And Darwin was quite obviously named Baby. So they have their official names that they were originally given, but they never get called them by me or my flatmate. It's always Monkey and Baby.

Ironically enough, it sounds like your guys are similar to mine - Newton is Agouti (which I think your little one might be) and Darwin is blue capped, though Darwin is smaller than Newton. wink

Regarding names - I can only say to go with what they seem to be. You can keep their original names, and just use nicknames, or you can change them. I agree that if you're going to do so, though, do it sooner rather than later. wink

Do you already have the photos on your computer there or no?

i have 2 rats... Hoodsie and Lucy. I was origanilly gunna name them Butta and Void (inside joke) but it did not fit them.. i am also a strong believer that animal pick the names they want... Lucy is sopposed to be the female version of Lucifer which is the name of one of the rabbits at school (i didnt know that Lucifer is the devil... i only thought it was a pretty name!) and she is no devil... if anything, she is more angel for her name. and Hoodsie was very hard to name... but then As Told By Ginger, a Nickelodeon show, came on, and i got the name hoodsie... also, she is a hooded rat, and she is black and white, so she reminded me of those chocolate and vinalla ic cream hoodsie cups! :)

My mom got the movie Willard for me yesterday and i have finally watched it! the next rats i get will be 2 males, 1 black, 1 white.. and i will name them Big Ben and Socrotes (sp?) LOL

Well - technically Lucifer is the name of the morning star, bringer of light (something which - later in the Bible - also refers to Jesus). It was only after a few translations that it was introduced as the name of the "fallen angel" that became synonymous with Satan/"the Devil" but originally it was simply another name for the planet Venus (AKA the Morning Star). :)

My first rat ever, was named Violet from The Series of Unfortunate Events. She was a dumbo, and my second rat was Sunny. I named them that because the were both petstore rats, but from different pet stores and they kind of reminded me of orphans, and they would have been feeders so that was unfortunate. Violet passed away at an early age from a respiratory illness Sad . So I got a new friend for Sunny at a petstore (at that time I wasn't aware I should get my rats from breeders.) I named her Isadora. Another character from the Series of Unfortunate Events who Violet, Sunny, and Klaus meet and become friends with. I thought that fitted perfectly.

Unfortunately, Isadora also passed away at an early age from the same respiratory illness, that Violet had passed away from. It was that day that I vowed to never buy a rat from a petshop again. Again, I had to find a friend for Sunny this time it wasn't so easy. I also put Sunny on anitbiotics in case she was still carrying the respiratory disease. I got my next rat from a woman who had already named ther rat Lola. The name kinda stuck and I was having bad luck choosing names so I kept the name.

My rats are named Colonel Kurtz and Willard after the two main characters in the fillm 'Apocalypse Now'. I live in a very little flat with my long suffering boyfriend who wasn't at all keen on the idea of getting rats ("can't you get someting cute and fluffy?"), however he cheerfully supported me, as always, so i named them for his favourite film, to thank hiim. However they seem aptly named as Colonel Kurtz is suitably chubby, confident and thoughtful, whilst Willard is wirey and nervous. And needless to say my boyfriend is now absolutely in love with the pair!

My babies are Imogene and Lady Madonna.

Imogene is incredibly shy, and to me, Imogene was always a sort of plain, introverted, shy-girl kind of name (and a beautiful one, at that). It only took me three days to decide what to name her based on her personality, and it seems to fit like a glove. She is very timid, very...shying from the limelight, but beautiful.

Lady Madonna was actually a couple of ideas put together. When I brought her home, she liked to put her paws on the glass and lean against it, and my roommate was talking to her and asked, "What are you doing, silly girl? Do you like to vogue?" Much like Madonna, she's got a big attitude and an independent nature. A friend of mine, a rat expert, said that Lady Madonna would be a nice name, as she liked the Paul McCartney song, and I thought it suited her, since she is albino...you know, pure, spotless, etc, like the Virgin Mary.

Sometimes I call Imogene Genie, or GeneGenie, and Lady Madonna gets all sorts of nicknames--Lady, Madonna, Donna.

I think they're perfect names for two very distinct sisters. :)

Dobie- because he is naked and reminded me of Dobie from the Harry Potter Movie
Cheech and Chong, because they are brothers and almost look identical and act identical in their amusing antics
Syd- original Syd "The Scardey Rat, then (because he is aggressive it changed to "Syd Vicious", and now it is Syd "The Handsome Hunk Of Rat" well because he is handsome
Engle,- my daughter named him it is german for Angel I believe but his nic name is "Old Man because he's a blue double rex and reminds me of a grandpa with his greyness and balding spots.
Sam of Siam- he is a snake rescue PEW but with a siamese mask, so it seemed fitting

Post I can't think of any names... Help?!
I can't seem to find any good names that 'stick'. I've had the names, Yoshi, Stitch, and Koda suggested by Family. But I don't know.. Anyone have any suggestions?

The 'white' boy. Though I'm pretty sure he's a mismarked smeeze. He has a little smudge on his nose. It just doesn't show up in the pics!

The other boy. (its hard to get him to hold still for a pic!)

Post Names?
well I was thinking about theme names
anyone have some good ones?

I don't have any ratties to name right now but my boyfriend is going to get a few soon
My girls have a car theme, but im getting tired of that one
so far we have been through
Honda (died), Acura, Mercury, Saturn and Mazda (gave to friends that wanted them), Elantra (had to take back to the store because she was sick when we bought her) and Scion

Dana was thinking about volcanoes
like Vesuvius, Skaptar, Pelée, Etna, or Merapi

Post RE: Names?
Richie Sambora is the Bon Jovi guitarist. Also did some solo stuff.

And BOY I feel old now, because I am a big Bon Jovi fan, have all their albums and started listening to them in the 80s. Your mom??? Faint You will have to call one Slash (from Guns N Roses and Velvet Revolver) though (or Hudson - his real surname) because he is the best guitarist ever. Then you have (Brian) May, (Jo) Satriani, (Steve) Vai, (Nuno) Bettencourt, (Ace) Frehley, (Jimmy) Page, (Tony) Iommi, (Eddie) Van Halen, to name but a few. wink

I tried the theme names with Darwin and Newton (obviously scientists - I originally wanted a couple of black and white boy cats (then rats) called Crick and Watson... they were blue and agouti though, so I wanted different names) but the pair of them were eternally known as Baby and Monkey - so in all honesty, I let them pick their own names now. Sooner or later, they soon figure out what they want to be called. wink

I don't know, pick a theme that has a meaning to you, I guess. If you like art, go with artists or colors or paint types, or if you like sports go with names of your favorite players. My boyfriend and I are naking all of ours after roleplay characters (like from Dungeons and Dragons campaigns), or after fantasy characters we've created.

Post Need a Christmas name
I have Holly and Christmas, two baby rats and I've worked out the cage will take three. We're thinking of taking on a rescue girl from an accidental litter someone has got near to us.

I am stuck for a name though, I want it something Christmassy.

Cracker makes me think of Robbie Coltrane (sorry US based people, UK reference!). Noel, Angel, Star, no. Gabriel makes me think of Gabriel Kent from the Bill. lol Definitely not! Mryhh (can't spell it) sounds like I can't remember what her name is and Frankinsence will get shortened to Frankie and that makes me think of Coronation Street.

So far I have Mistletoe which will probably get shortened to Little Miss. Or Tinsel. Any ideas?

No to Rudolph, Snowy, Frosty or anything like that. I'm being really fussy!

She'll be a black hooded.

Ginger made me laugh because Christmas IS a ginger hoodie (silver fawn). So for her to have a black hoodie cagemate called Ginger, that'd be too weird!

Pudding is possible, we'd have to feed her up though. wink

Gift is kinda cool. Not sure J will go for it, he thought Mistletoe was too weird. I said no to Noel cos it's a bloke's name, and makes me think of Noel Edmonds (eew). I think I watch too much tv...

I'm thinking about adopting one, or two from you if they are still available. I'll be getting a new cage for my two boys. Probably in the next week or two. Already have it picked out, just need to buy it. And it's waaay too roomy for just two ^_- I already have a quarentine cage for any new ratties I get, and a perfect spot for it downstairs. (I know, its best to quarentine in a seperate house, but it's the best I can do for now XP). Would it be possible to get a picture of just the boys for me?
Also, do you have an adoption fee? (just so I know how much I should have ready for you when the time comes XP)

I named my newest rat Miyagi. I put a lot of time and thought into my names and I always wait a few days to see the animal's personality. First off, he's a siamese dumbo, so being siamese, I wanted an asian name for him. All of the names I could think of were from anime shows that I watch and none of them seemed fitting. After the few days wait, It was apparent that this little guy was very curious and brave. From the first day he was completely unafraid of me. He walks right up to my dog to sniff him or even try to steal a bite of food he may have with him. He's very playful and will actually chase my hand and run away only to turn back again and pounce on me. So a brave asian neme....Mr. Miyagi was a pretty cool character...wax on wax off...but I wasnt sure if that really suited him. That day I went to work and on my lunch break in the lounge, one of the karate kid movie's was on...this had to be a sign. The short time I was in there watching, I remembered how much of a smart ass that guy could be and he was a very brave man...so that was it. so my little guy is Miyagi!

Hey, I'm new here and I just got my first rats a couple days ago (I posted an introduction in the casual corner).

Ricky is the name of my black and white hooded rat. I just really like the name of that football player, Ricky Ray...I dont remember what team he's on. Also, I thought it would be cute to be Ricky Rat, sounds like a cousin of Mickey Mouse's or something...

The other two are beige and white hooded, and they are almost inseparable. I was having trouble thinking of names for them...they're always together and they look so much alike so I wanted something that matched. Suddenly my boyfriend piped up "How about Pete and Repeat?" I thought it was adorable and perfect for them, so it stuck.

Basil : My mom was cooking with herbs the night before I got her.
Nutmeg (RIP) : Same as above.
Bear : She is black, fiesty, and had a bear like face (Big chin!)
Stumbleweed : My sister dropped her in the store, felt bad lol so she came with us! Originally was tumbeweed, but stumbeweed osunded cuted for her.
Shroomsicle : Was orginally Mini Nutmeg, but the she got faqtter lol, so I was liek you look like a little Mushroom! so Shroom came into play.
Matilda : My older sister named her that because she was runty and cute.
willow (RIP) : Was orginalyl snakebate (Was her name when I got her) Then her gentle nature, adorable hood, and many days pondering what ot call this old girl, willow became her name and suited her really well. Her favoutrite toy was this ball, and I recently found what they were called Willow Balls, Coinsidence? Maybe.

That's all!

Almost a couple years ago, I adopted 2 rats and 5 mice at the same time. I am a fan of old soulful blues and bluegrass music, and oldies in general.
So...
I honored the rattie girls with the names of 2 of my most favorite divas...
Aretha (Franklin) and Etta (James).
The mice boys got, for example, Marvin (as in Gaye) and Otis (as in Williams, the founder of The Temptations... not Redding, whom is equally deserving of a namesake).

When I got my newest 3 rattie girls, I had considered sticking with the diva theme. Maybe giving them names like Tina (Turner) or Nina (Simone) or Mary J (Blige) or Chaka Khan or....
But after recently losing Etta, I couldn't do it.

So I named one Emmie Lou as a variation on Emmylou Harris. I then asked my boyfriend to pick 2 girly yet respectful sounding names. He chose Agnes and Matilda. :)

I was going to name my first ever rats Mocha and Latte as they were coffee colour and creamy coffee colour.. But that got changed to Maggie and Flo, not really sure where they came from.. I just wanted some old fashioned sounding names!!
My next rat was from a friend who couldn't look after her anymore.. She was originally Pernod, but I didn't like it, so changed it to Poncho.. (It was going to be Pancho after Pancho Villa, but again, I changed my mind..
Scamps was Gus, Tom, Fry, and a load of other names before he was Scamps.. and then that was Scampi.. He was just so jumpy and into everything..
When I bought two brothers, who turned out to be brother and sister, one had a helmet so I was going to name him warrior, He turned out to be the she.. I have always wanted to call my daughter Hero (when I have one..) so I decided that Warrior would be Hero.. Her brother then adopted the name Warrior.
Then Hero decided that she was pregnant (store made pregnancy..) so after weeks of playing with her 9 babies, I finally came up with names..
I wanted unusual ones, so I typed in descriptive features of them into a thesaurus and named them after one of the alternative words! So..
The Girls:
Harry- has a face like a badger, and to badger is also to "harry"
Crue- is variegated, which turned up Motley.. hence the "Crue" (cheesy, I don't like the story but I like the name!!)
Maude- is the odd one out.. named after my grandmother.
Eidolon- she has a triangle on her back almost like another tail.. To shadow is to tail, and another word for a shadow is "Eidolon"
HotFoot- has a lightning bolt on her head, to bolt is to "hot foot"

The Boys:
Salty- is a blue rat, and apparently, when blue means distasteful, it is also known as "Salty".. not that he's a distasteful rat!
Baffle- has a missing bit in his back stripe.. which looked a bit like a cross. Apparently there is something of "to stump" in cross, and to stump is to "baffle"
Ilk- has a complete "stripe" and to be of the same stripe is to be of the same "ilk"
Monk- has no synonyms in the thesaurus, but he has a bald spot like a monk!!

So that's how I got my names!!
