I'm getting my first mouse this weekend, along with a cage mate for him/her, but I'm currently questioning a few things. I want to get the best one.. considering this is the first time I've ever owned a mouse and being a rat owner I was wondering are the colors and basic care for the animals the same?

Yes, care is basically the same but the Horn web page gives great advise.
This may sound obvious and totally paranoid but you do know the rats will/may kill the mice so you have to make sure the mice are in a secure cage.
