My vets routinely use meloxicam for pain relief in almost all small furries and I (and they I would assume) have found it to be very effective.

I wouldn't discount rats having mites just because only one is showing symptoms.
In my experience of having rats (22 was the most I had at one time) I have never had all of them break out with mites ... |
