stanky girls |
|
Continued from here.
Disgusting little bitches. LOL Thimble doesn't smell at all, never has. When he was living alone for a while after his last girls were gone, I only had to spot-clean the cage every couple days and fully clean it maybe every two weeks. He would pee in his food once in a while but otherwise used the litter boxes quite fastidiously.
I was thinking of getting some of those small ceramic dishes with the integrated half-round hood. Maybe that will help.

Well, how long have you had the girls? If it hasn't been more than a few weeks, it could just be that their systems are still adjusting to the food you feed them. Or perhaps they were not fed well before, and now that they are being fed well they tend to overdo it. That would certainly cause more poos, and more smell.
Are you litter box training them? If not, that might help cut down on the smell.
Or do you feed them fruits and veggies regularly? If so, try cutting down on the amount you feed, and only offer them once every other day for a week or two - see if that helps.
It could all just getting their systems used to your food, or if they are fairly new mice it could also be due to them being a bit stressed about the new surroundings and smells.
What bedding are you using for them? My girls tend to be a little more smelly if I use Carefresh bedding - but have almost no smell with Yesterday's News. Aspen shavings are somewhere inbetween. Maybe try changing the litter to see if that helps.

Let's see, it's been about two weeks. They were eating lab blocks before we got them and are now eating a modified Suebee's mix, and grits with different stuff mixed in. Very little bits of different veggies once in a while. But it's not the poop that's stinky (well that is a little bit), it's that same smell the GBs had, and I think it's indiscriminate peeing. They're also the least stressed mice I've ever seen. So friendly and curious, and loving the big new cage! But I'm going to try different litters and see which will end up in the litter boxes, then I will only use that certain litter for the boxes and the rest can be softer stuff like CareFresh, etc. I've been throwing poops into the litter boxes but they aren't "getting" it yet. And they poop faster than I can shovel.

Covered dishes? So they can pee in private?

When I first read the topic title, I thought it said "Skanky Girls". lmfao
I agree with most everyone's suggestion of litter-training.

They are skanky, too, one or more are always in heat, running around like little sluts with noses up each other's rear ends. Good thing Thimble is not interested!
One girl, the darkest one, is turning out to be a real snot. There's one in every bunch. She goes out of her way to pick on Thimble. In turn, he picks on one of the other two, but only if they happen to be handy, at least he doesn't seek them our purely to make them miserable. Mouse heirarchy.

Interestingly enough, both Buttercup and Louie often sat "oddly."

Wow, you got new meeces, Kate? Since my business is retail, I've been off-line most of the holiday season and just now am getting back on a normal schedule. Congrats. When do we get pictures?
