...Poor little mice for being able to live longer lives?

Granted, I think it's a little wrong to try and cheat death...dying is a natural process. However, I think extending the lifespan of anything, humans, mice, whatever, is a worthwhile cause.

I had a mouse named princess...her and her male friend Ben...Ben lived to be three, which is pretty good....Princess was over 4 years old..I had her for 4 years and I dont know how old she was when I got her from the pet shop.... I wish I had pic of her..she was completly full of little tumors when she died. Mom didnt believe in a vet for those types of animals back then. I thought that was normal back then.. I had a hamster live to be 5...at the time I thought it was normal as well...I was 10.. and that was 18 years ago..Currently the oldest living mouse here is Dottys Spots, she will be three in exactaly 1 month and 5 days. Out of my chocolate spotted line that has not seen tumors in over a year now. I wish I could get that kind of money for making my pets live long (without drugs and treatments and expirementing) just good breeding and good diet. Shaz

Wow four years! But thats sad what your mom thought. Well a mouse that old would probably not survive a major surgery like a tumor removel anyway.

I think that was what she was mainly thinking plus the mice just werent her thing. Now though she understands better and wouldnt bat an eye if I had to take one in to the vet. She helps to socialize the babies here as well. Shaz

Another thing I thought is...how would a person be at 150? I mean looks and physical functions. I dont think at 150 years old you would have a very good quality of life, or look very good. I know I dont want to live that long. Shaz

Remember, in medieval times, those over the age of forty were elderly; by that age, you were crippled with disease, rickets, and/or malnutrition. Now medicine and nutrition have done a lot to improve quality of life for the elderly. The mouse that wins the Methuselah Mouse Prize must, according to the rules, remain functional until the end of its life; id est, be able to feed itself. The mice in the study are active and have the same quality of life as mice that die earlier; it's not as if they go on living hooked up to a bunch of respirators and and IVs. Comparable results could feasibly be achieved for humans.
