Potential Danger of Crittertrail Cage

I stayed up pretty late last night and thank God I did or one of my mice would have died a horrible death!!

Last night I found my mouse Squall had lodged his head between the bars by the door!!

He must have been stuck there for quite some time because when I got him out he was very cold and barely moving

Thankfully he is doing fine now

I was so scared. I just wanted to warn others that this cage may not be good for mice!

Yikes! I am glad he is okay!

Are all of the bars to large, or is it one section? I know alot of hamster owners don't like Crittertrails because the hamster could chew out of the tubes and escape. Is that a consern with mice too?

Poor lil guy, I'm glad he's alright though!!

If I ever get mice, I'll be sure to stay away from those cages.

Well, the bars by the door are pretty large.

I also don't like the cage because its very flimsy. For example, the shelves on top constanty fall because the mice knock them over. If I am at work and one of the shelves fall, they cant get water because the water bottle is above the shelf.

They are cute cages.

I havnt had anyone chew through anything yet. I've had that problem with another cage though which I think I may post a warning about.

If your mice are tiny they will get out. Also if you don't put the wheel on right, it will stretch the bars in back and leave a lovely escape gap!!!!

I am glad your boy is okay.

I have always hated those doors. I used to have a CritterTrail cage, but after I had one mouse escape through the corner of the door (while I was watching!), I threw it in the back yard. It's been out there, collecting leaves, ever since.

Those cages are really annoying. Yuck

Every time you clean them, you have to completely take them apart, and getting them back together is just too much of a hassle. There is no way it should take me 20 minutes to put a simple mouse cage back together. Rolling Eyes

I have since moved all of my mice into tanks - where there is nothing for them to get stuck in or hurt on, and I haven't had a single escape. wink

I have the perfect cage that I love. My girls happily live in it. Its nice and spacious it has small bars and it comes with a wheel that resembles a wodent wheel

It also has a secure shelf with a tunnel to the bottom

But yes critter trail cages are just plain bad...

When I was using the cage as a temporary holding cage, one of my mice escaped through the rounded space at the corner of the door, too. I remedied it by cutting a piece of coat hanger wire to length and bending/crimping it to make an additional bar running through that space. That solved the problem, but as others stated, that cage is a pain and I keep it as a backup only.

Unfortunately I have a few of those cages. Awhileback one of my smaller mice escaped through the bars. I woke up up tp him NESTING IN MY SHIRT only after he had chewed some tassles off my pillows. What a little turd

Can't say that didn't suprise me though in the morning lol.
