Important RP Announcement - FORUMS CLOSED

After many months of pondering and indecision, I have decided that it is time to put RatPalace to rest. There are several reasons for this decision - mostly time and costs - but other factors have helped me to make this decision.

Due to all of the valuable information contained on RP the site will not be disappearing completely. It will be put into an archived state. These changes will take place at midnight EST on Sunday, February 19 on RatPalace's 6th Anniversary.

All articles will remain and rat/mouse related forum information will remain and will be set to Read Only (no posting). Other boards may or may not be removed. Other changes to miscellaneous sections of the site may be removed or changed as well. But all important health and care info will remain for as long as I keep the RatPalace domains.

During this week it would be a good idea to exchange email addresses and let others you wish to stay in contact with know if there is another board you will be posting at. There are other rat forums out there - I'm not leaving you high and dry! Many of you already post at several of them. Feel free to have discussions here about where you will be going or suggestions of other rat communities.

Many thanks to all of you who have made RatPalace what it is over the years. Also many thanks to those of you who have donated your time and/or money to keep us up and running this long. I have met some wonderful people and have learned so much. I will miss it greatly, but it's something I need to do and I hope you guys understand that.

Let me be the first to say thanks to you Christy (and of course Jason) for all the time, money, effort and energy you've put into keeping RatPalace up and running, and providing such a wonderful community over the last 6 years. RatPalace was (and is) the only forum I've felt totally at home at, but all good things eventually have to come to an end. Thank you for giving so much, for providing a home for the Squeak! folk when that forum closed and for helping, supporting and educating so many people since then - me included.

I'll miss this place for sure, but I've made some great friends and learned more than I ever thought there could be to learn (and there's still so much more out there). Thank you, Christy (and Jason) for everything, and thank you to the rest of the mods and members of helping to make RP the best forum for rats and their humans. I'm honoured to have been part of that, as a mod, as a member, and as a rat mum. Hug

I haven't been a member of this site for very long, and don't post often, but the amount of information I found here was simply amazing. Thanks to everyone that made this site what it is!

It can't have been an easy decision, Christy, but it must have become a monumental amount of work over the years. I was one of the ones who arrived here at the beginning, when the Squeak board closed, and you set up RP to give us a new home. I've met some wonderful people here and learned an enormous amount in the past six years. You deserve a rest, but also our thanks.

Andy, were you a Squeaker too? It seems like you've been here forever and I can't keep track of who was/is who half the time. LOL

But this place has been far better than Squeak ever was, and has been the best rat site on the web, bar none. Sad to see it go, but good to know that it will be archived for all the great info we've gathered here over the years.

I wonder if this means I can get away from Linda now. duck

No, I'm still a nipper in the rat world - I've only owned rats for the last couple of years now, though I spent about 6 months prior to that doing my usual manic research before I got them and I've wanted rats since I was in my early teens (a while back now, I admit). My flatmate/best friend is the rat fiend - he's had rats for about 12 years now, so between him, my sick rats who forced me to learn everything I could medical, and RP I learned a lot. However, I also know my RP history. I wish I'd been around for Squeak! - I continually feel like such a noob compared to so many people here.

Edit: I just noticed that I signed up on RP's 4th birthday - so I will have been a member for 2 years exactly when we stop posting.

Awwww. Well, I'm sure the decision wasn't easy, but I commend you for doing what you need to do to reclaim your own life!

I cannot thank you enough for having provided us a virtual home for six years. I, too, an another Squeak refugee, and I remember how wonderful it was to know that we'd all reconvene, thanks to you and Jason.

Well, I'm glad I found this place when I did...had I waited another couple months to get rats I probably would have never stumbled upon it. There's a lot of really great people here and loads of information that has already helped me out so much in the short month I've been a rat mommy. I've been to other forums but I've only posted here. It reminds me a lot of another community I used to be apart of (besides the fact that that was a peircing community, and also some of the mods were mean). I'm going to miss it here, but I'm so thankful I had the opportunity to be a part of it for a little while.

well i don't know about anyone else, but while i am sad to see this forum go, i am glad that it is the right decision for christy.

for those who don't know of the other place i visit the mostest, come over to Rats Rule forum and give us a try. it is only as good as the people who post and with everyone here posting over there, it is sure to be great.

Remember that thread about who was from Squeak! and does anyone remember it...one day we'll all be on another forum, and someone will say, "Remember RatPalace?" and we'll all chat about how great RP was and all the newbies to the rat-forum world wont know what we're talking about, lol.

Then, Andy, you, myself and others will be "old school" like those on these forums who were from Squeak! before...

I really prefer this smiley set too...if its okay with Christy, maybe she'd be willing to let me use it on the new site(?) I still haven't gotten that stupid confirmation email though, so I don't even though if that would work or not..maybe you have to use the ones that're standard with the forum? I dunno yet.

Is there anything we could do to keep it going? Like a monthly subscription or something? And shring the admin work so Christy gets her life back?! I have no clues at all about hosting aites etc.. But I'm happy to put some work and money in if it means that this place can keep going.. I've met some really nice people on here.. Had some great advice.. Laughed and cried at similar experiences.. It's such a shame to let it go, but I am hugely grateful that I ever found you in the first place.. Bee

Oh, My this is a sad day indeed. I joined this club right after my King George I passed, and I learned so much. So many wonderful people. I am going to miss this site. I know this was such a tough decision for you to make. Please Willow tell me where you will go, you are just too stinkin smart for me to let go!LOL! Christy I wish you the best of luck in adventures. I will miss everyone, and I hope someone will tell me where everyone is going.

*sniffle* This site has been such a help to me, having just moved into college and being completely lonely and ratless (well, separated from my rat), and when I discovered this place I actually felt like I was a part of something, like a big, friendly community that I could just enjoy participating in without worry. I'm going to miss it, but I respect the decisions made to close it, however sad they may be Sad

I will definitely check out the other forum right away; I'll be looking for all the familiar 'faces' (for lack of a better word). Thanks everyone, for everything

I'm really, really sorry guys. :*( But Ratsicles is going to create a new home for you and Rats Rule is welcoming everyone with open arms. And I'll be at both places! All info will remain on the site - just posting will be locked down to read only.

I know I'm taking a lot away, but I just can't do it anymore right now. You have no idea how much time it consumes - especially when things start breaking. And how much money it consumes. You can see we have almost 3000 members and less than 40 have ever given any kind of donation, as seen on the Donate to RP link - even if it was just $5.00 every little bit helped. I appreciate every penny that was sent in to help, but that option has been available for several years and it's not brought enough to cover even one year of hosting in all that time. So I couldn't count on donations, even if that was the only reason we had to shut down.

I know it's a hard blow to many of you - I'm very sad about it as well. I've spent thousands of hours of my free time on this site and now that free time is virtually gone due to my job, my freelance work, my family and my personal needs. I'm drained, I'm tired and I need to let it go before I can't keep up with it and it all goes downhill all together. It will remain here as a fabulous resource site that we have all contributed to and hopefully help other rat owners for a long time to come.

Well said, Christy. RP as a resource and a testament will not go away. Even the community won't go away thanks to RatsRule and other places many of us might gather. As someone here said about RR, a community is only as good as its posters, so if a big chunk of the RP posters moves over there, the RP community will never truly go away. And for much of it to become part of RR can only make for an even better place all round.

Do you people not realize that Christy and Jason started this site with their own time, effort, and expense, and have been running it only with donated help since then? I'm glad that there have been more "thank-you"s than whinges, but to you whiners, please, have some character and integrity! Yeesh! I feel like I am pinching one of my nieces or nephews! "Now say 'thank you'!"

Christy, I've always wondered how you managed to keep this place going with all your other responsibilities. I can honestly say I could never have done it even when I had no life other than my computer and pets. And in all these years you've never once complained. I take my hat off to you Hat

Though I am sad to see RP go and will cry and whine about it, I understand the need to get away from it. I will always treasure the memories I have of RP - the family I have because of your hard work. Hug

Aww... even though I'll be really sad to see RP go, I understand that this is something you have to do and you shouldn't feel guilty. I'm grateful for this year and a half that I've spent at RP. When I first got rats I looked at other rat forums and this one seemed best so I joined and liked it so much that I didn't want to join any others. Christy and Jason, thank you so much for all the hard work and effort you put into our "rat home". I'm really going to miss getting updates on all my RP favorites, talking about schlooping and "cleaning", and helping people/being helped.

This is where I have learned so many things. I joined a few months after it started. I've been able to share my ups and downs in rattie ownership. I've learned as much here as I've learned from my vet and probably more. I've made some wonderful friendships. Friendships that I know won't end here. I've loved to share stories, pics and everything rattie with many of you.

Had it not been for RP.....I would have been lost. But as Christy mentioned, the site itself is not going away. There are many wonderful and informative articles here as well as thousands of posts to research.

Many of us are sad to see the forums going away. But RR will be a great place to post. And we can all keep email friendships going with those we have grown to count on.

As an addition to my last post here - I am aware that there are a few people not on the donators list that have donated. The automatic function for that listing was broken during the last hack and we've not had time to fix it as it involves a decent amount of custom coding to dig into. But I did ensure that each person that donated got their RP Supporter tag under their name. Just wanted to explain that in case it was brought up.

And I'm not trying to complain or anything - I just want everyone to be aware of the situation and understand that I'm not just doing this because I'm bored with RP or because of any particular one reason. I don't expect apologies, I don't expect thank you's. I just expect this last week to be the same as it always was and not to go down in a ball of flames.

I have heard that RR has some not so nice people, that's how I came here. Sylvias Zoo allowed me to adopt 4 of her babies after King George I passed and she said this was the best site, and that RR was just not near as warm and fuzzy shall we say. This has been my home for over a year. I just hope we can all stay together somehow. I am grateful for all the wonderful people I have encounterd and the great advice. I still can't help but feel I am betraying RP though when I am over on RR it just feels weird and out of place to me.

I'm in the same boat as you guys. It just doesn't feel the same, almost like it's so big that it's just overwhelming. If I check the messages even 15 minutes after I did last there's a whole ton of new messages to read...whereas here there'd be only a few so I could check every few hours and only spend maybe 10-15 min reading/responding each time.

I'm trying to be friendly on RR and am getting many equally friendly responses but it's just so weird not recognizing everyone's names! It's weird...you don't realize how nice it is to be able to remember individuals' names until you suddenly don't know anyone.

I also feel like it's more of a hassle to actually respond...RP has this nice 'Quick Reply' on the bottom that I like so very much

I'm afraid even that extra 'reply' click will slow me down in responding Confused

And on a side note, I have never seen another forum with such expressive smileys as RP. I shall miss their familiar little smiley, angry, sad, winking faces.... (actually for some reason the wink reminds me of LittleWillow...I think cause she uses it so much

)

I think it's pretty safe to say we are all very grateful to have had the opportunity to share it.

But I can totally understand that it's something that has to be done, and I am so glad I've had it the past 2 years. I'm so grateful for all the information I've been given and, well, it's thanks to RP that I decided to get rats in the first place.

I know I never posted much but it does feel like "home" here and that can sometimes be a difficult thing to find on forums. So many thanks to Christy (and Jason) for having this place for us where we can brag about our ratties. Hug

I have no doubt there are lots of nice people on RatsRule...but the problem may be that there's just *too* many Blink

Dawn, I tend to like sticking with one forum as well, and RP has become that forum. It's so hard to suddenly drop it and try switching to something else Sad

I'm sure it will work out with either RatsRule or this RatsAhoy that Ratsicles and LittleWillow are working on (could this be the next step in the saga of RPers?), I just am feeling very overwhelmed by the idea of it.

Just a few quick comments. First, there is a quick reply option on Rats Rule, you just need to turn it on

It's one of the options in your profile. We also have lots of smilies, including many of the same ones here on RP, just click the more smilees button

We have had problems with some idiots on the forum, just as RP or any other forum does. We've also gotten rid of those people rather quickly. In fact RP and Rats Rule have kept in contact for a long time, sharing information about trolls.

I know it's a little overwhelming at first because you don't know everyone. But you quickly will. We are a family too, and we do know everyone. You will find that many RP people are already on RR and have been for a long time, just under different names. So if you are one of those people, make sure to make yourself known!

If anyone has any problems, make sure to let myself or one of the other moderators know.

Christy has been a member of Rats Rule for a long time and like she has said, she will be posting there more now. And if she ever decides she'd like to, she has an open invitiation to become a moderator.

Awwww ... Christie... I am so sad that RatPalace has to go. I know that this decision was not easy for you, but that it was something you had to do. I have learned alot and been helped through alot of hard times here. Nothing will ever be the same as RP. I will miss it alot.

I'm doing my best to fit in at RR and so far everyone has been very friendly, welcoming, and supportive

I'll look into turning on that quick reply thing... *feels stupid*... My name on RR is the same as my RP name, in case that hasn't been figured out yet

I have noticed that a lot of the smileys are the same, however I'm finding myself missing the Shocked

one...that one just makes me giggle whenever I see it.

dragynflye...the exact same thing happened to me. I've been in PA all weekend and just got back around noontime today, only to find that my favorite site of all time is reaching it's end....I would be lying to say my eyes didn't get watery at all. It'll be all right though, we just need to be thankful for Christy for giving this to us for an impressive 6 years and move on to other forums, RatsRule and if Rats Ahoy! gets set up successfully, then I'm sure a lot of RPers will go there (I know I will).

I found Rat Palace after RR and the RMCA forums. I had never been on an internet forum before I got rats and realized there was stuff I could find out no other way. All three places have a nice bunch of people. I visit each for various reasons, kind of like visiting different neighborhoods. I really thank everyone here for all the help with my ratties.

Another heartfelt thank-you from me. Christy and Jason, I've had lots of fun on these forums over the years, and more importantly have learnt so much. They've helped me to look after my ratties properly, given me amazing advice when they've been sick, and comforted and supported me at the ends of their lives. I still pass on all the useful things I've learnt here to other rat owners, both on and off line, and I'm sure everyone else will do the same. That was the most valuable part of RP – the real community that grew here, made everyone welcome and shared their wisdom.
I can’t tell you how grateful I am to have had this ‘safe haven’. My only regret is that I didn’t find it in time to correct the mistakes I made with my first ratties. Thank you again, from P, Quaffle, Mr Nibbler, Dougal, Donnie, Charlie and Snoopy.

That happened to me to, but then I found I was signed in just not signed up for the e-mail which is where I kept trying to sign in at. If you scroll down on the left of the page it will show the different forums, just click "Rats Rule!" and it will take you into the forum. You should also have a confirmation e-mail from goosemoose in your regular e-mail account showing your sign in name and password. Then it will tell you to click link to activate.

Yup indeed - it should be ready before RP closes it's forum doors - some features will still be planned for future upgrades but the main forum functions will all be there. Because it's running on a different forum product, there are some slight differences in forum codes and so on, but I'm sure you guys will all pick them up easily. Brittany will, I'm sure, let everyone know when it's ready.

I havnt had Rats for very long and i only found Rat Palace in November last year but im here for the long haul. I have so many problems in my life because i am a rat owner and its great to be able to come to a place where people share common interests....smile

Can you believe this....yesterday at work i was told i am no longer allowed to discuss my girls at work.....other can talk about their cats and dogs but because my girls are dirty disease carrying animals i have to stop talking about them.....HUH

My girls are so clean...if they so much as touch a human they wash themselves so clean its not funny....they dont want human germs on them

I feel like im working in a communist organisation where they dictate what you say......NOT NICE....cant wait for long service leave then i quit....smile 10 months to struggle thru

Not talk about your rats at work?....that is definitely insane.

I quietly bring my ratties in to work in a carrier when I need to make vet visits on my lunch (the vet is 5 minutes from where I work and I live 45 minutes a way....so without this option, I'd have to take time off of work).
I'm always very quiet about it, as I just KNOW that someday someone will say something. And I'm already prepared. Evil or Very Mad

That's discrimination. I mean really. If you can't talk about your rats....no one else can talk about their cats or dogs.....or kids! wink

WOW, I left for a week, went to the Pro bowl and got online, now I am all sad..... Well Chritsy, I must say that I have only een a memebr for a year, however during this past year, I have made friends I will never forget. I always talk about my frinds from RP, even though I do not have any other contact with them. This site has been so wonderful, warm, caring, knowledgable and just enjoyable. I am so sad to know this is ending, however I understand that it can not be easy. Christy, if you ever decide to begin a forum like this, that has a monthly or yearly charge, I will be more than glad to join.... I love all the people here and of course all the rats.... i haven't been allowed to talk about my girls for years. i work for my parents and even tho several of my co-workers love them, one customer complained that they saw them (i don't see how as i always kept them out of sight) and since then my dad has been on high alert so that the customers don't see any of my rat paraphanalia. i have a rat calander that i had to put on the inside of my door so that it couldn't be seen from outside my office or my dad would constantly close my door. how could you not love those little whiskery faces... I ASK YOU....

As everyone else has noted, this has been one of the best boards I've been involved with, both in terms of content and friendliness. Heck, I've never even owned a rat, but my mice and rabbits have fared well from everyone's diverse background of information.
I joined shortly before my first mice found me (when I was intending to get rats) and now the last of my mice is in her winter, having just passed two years of age, so I suppose there is some irony in timing.
I will have to poke around and see where everyone else lands and check in from time to time. Best wishes for your future.

Ouch! I'm another one who's been away for a few days and come back to find this post - I feel like someone's locked me out of my house!

Gutted as I obviously am, I also would like to thank Christy and Jason for all their hard work in making this the first place I go to as soon as I get online. Although I've not posted much over the last year or so I still check the forum all the time. I'm another ex-Squeaker, so for the past 6 or 7 years these guys and all the other RP people have given me a home from home and taught me so much. I'll be signing up to RA straight away; hopefully if all you guys do too we'll be able to recreate at least some of the RP atmosphere! Great job Britt and Andy for getting the new forum up and running so fast - I think I would have panicked without knowing about that!

I'm using the same name on RA, so anyone who knows me here should be able to spot me there

Oh no!! I have not been on here for a good year due to many things going on in life, and now that life is starting to settle down, I decided to pop into Rat Palace to see what was happening, and was so sad to hear it is closing. I have been here for several years, and I felt like people on this board were an extended family. I am going to miss it, but I will be around on the other boards now that I am back. Thank you to Christy and to Jason for making this such a wonderful place where we all learned so much, and thanks to everyone who helped me along in some of the most difficult times in my life. I missed you all, I hope to see some familiar faces at the other boards!

The strange thing is, I don't know why I happened to check in when I did, I'm in the middle of moving, trying to get work done, and just felt this urge to check the boards!! I can promise you that I will definitely be over at Rats Ahoy!

I go away for a bit and I happen to come back on RP's last day. Sad

I've been a member since the beginning and it is definitely sad to see such a wonderful community come to an end. I have made so many friends and met so many wonderful people through this place, not to mention the countless amount of information and advice that I have gotten from here over the years. Thank you, Christy and Jason, for everything you've done. It won't be forgotten. I'll miss this place.
