*Trying* to make a new cage...

I am attmepting to make a cage out of an old bookshelf and I would like some help from some people that have done it before... What supplies should I get... What would be good to keep the urine from seeping into the wood? Any other tips or things I should know? Just tell me...
Also I have been trying to get them litter trained for the longest time but it's just not working what do u suggest?
Any suggestions are welcome...

i made one out of a large bathroom cupboard thingy. It was great the kids loved it

but it got too smelly too quickly. My babies were toilet trained but they still peed everywhere and i couldn't change it every day or so. I used towels as bedding, and the wood was covered in laminate so i didn't notice any urine seeping into the wood.

I stuck the towels down with velcro (stuck to both the wood and the towel) but they saw it as a challenge and i lost many a towels through rat chewing. The way i trained my babies to poop in their box was just put all the raisins in and keep loadin them in each time i see some, eventually they got the idea, persistance is the key!

I eventually decided to make a makeshift cage out of 3 aquariums, 2 old birdcages and some ol phonebooks to block the holes

they love it more. Thumbs Up

Sven answered what I was going to say. Just make sure you coat it in Shellac.
I have two cages made like the Grotto, and am making on that is four feet, by four feet, and made out of wire frame-work.
