Rattie cookbook, hammocks, etc...anyone interested? *UPDATE* |
|
Update at bottom of thread!
***************************
As some of you know, I have a website I've been casually working on, and as I'm getting a sewing machine soon I want to start a store there to earn $ to start an actual rescue in the near future One of the things I've been thinking about selling is a nice spiral bound, laminated rattie cookbook. I have a few recipes that my rats absolutely love, but not enough to fill the whole thing. If anyone would be willing to contribute their favorite recipes, I would credit them in the book and send them one of the original copies to have with everyone's recipes in them for free.
I'm also planning on making hammocks and snuggle sacks, especially ones for different seasons (ex. fleece and flannel for winter, cotton and canvas for summer, etc.). I also want to make some for different holidays, like hannukah, winter solstice celebrations, etc. in addition to your usual christmas & Fourth of July type ones. My dad has even said he would be willing to make huts out of wood that isn't pine or cedar with pegs instead of glue and padded edges to prevent injuries. Would people actually be interested in any of these things? I'm willing to make them if there is a demand, but I do have 41 (43 currently) ratties to care for!

Sounds like a great idea Jess
I'd be glad to donate a couple of recipes.
I'd probably be interested in some of those huts your Dad plans on making~sounds awesome.
I hate getting any wood products for any of my rodents as the wood is hardly every labled as to what tree it comes from!
Considering there is so much pine and cedar shavings on the market, when a company says a wood product is rodent friendly, I'm inclined to be wary.
Let us know how your plans progress.

Sure JA! Photos in general, and of the recipes (and ratties enjoying them) would be wonderful too Everything will be credited to the people who provided them of course. I'll even include a section of birthday treats, if people would want to submit what extra special snacks their ratties get I think the cookbook will be a definite, so if people want to PM their recipes and photos I'll start compiling. I'm hoping to have it available by the winter holidays.
Christy, is there any way we could sticky this for a while just to see if there's a substantial interest? I'd really appreciate it!

Certainly! Didn't we do something like this before and had a pretty good collection of recipes? Course all our old archives were lost so we may never know.

Sounds like a great idea! I have a few recipes and of course I can take some pics of my ratties (especially Nemo) enjoing them I'll try to send you some soon when I have the time
-Dani and Nemo
Edit to add:
Do you think it would be a good idea to add Debbie D.'s molasses mix recipe and the fresh fruits and veggie menu? of course you would have to get her permission and if she agreed I could give you this pic of Nemo enjoing the molasses mix

I was actually planning on asking her for permission to use her recipes, as well as Suebee (for her rattie mix) Dani (could you PM me her email, BTW? I can't find it!) I'm also planning on asking Heather from RR if I can use her vegan yogie recipe, too. I just wanted to see if there was an interest first
Either PM me with your recipes, or email them to me at beansanddoom at yahoo dot com. Be sure to include your name, state (if you're okay with that), and how many ratties the recipe is for, and any other info you want to appear. Also if you send me photos, make them fairly big and high quality so they will still look good if I have to shrink them in layout.
Please use common sense too, I won't include anything I feel is unhealthy for ratties. (say chocolate/carmel/peanut butter/melted marshmallow sticky goo) or anything that hasn't been rattie tested or includes ingredients that are harmful. Not that anyone would do that, but sometimes disclaimers must be made

Oh, photos are great too! A lot of my "recipes" are fruit with yogurt and Nilla wafers, eggs with extra stuff thrown in...you get the idea Even simple things are fine, like if you have a special way you prepare oatmeal for them even! Any photos of rats eating tasty things can be fit in somewhere

I have 23 recipes as of today! It looks like the cookbook is DEFINITELY going to happen, but I could still use more recipes and photos! If everyone would who has sent me a recipe would PM me with their number of ratties their recipe is for (if you haven't already) and how you want to be credited, that would be great!

Hi :o) I'm new to the board
I'm Lindsay, 15, from Missouri, with just one rattie for now, my love of my life, Gracey Louisa, but we're getting a new baby here in just a few weeks as soon as she's ready to leave her mama. I'm so excited!
Anyways, I have some rattie mixes that I've made up and feed to Gracey, she loves them :o) I can type them up and send them to you, what's your e-mail address?

Sadly, the cookbooks won't be ready for Christmas. I don't have enough submissions yet to make the cost worthwhile, and I'm so broke I can't afford to get them printed right now I'm selling scarves, and will start selling hammocks and huts soon hopefully so that the money can go towards printing costs. I have some graphic design experience, but it's taking me SO long to do the pages. School has finally slowed down a bit (I got more than 3 hours of sleep for the first time in 4 1/2 weeks last night) so I'm hoping I'll have a bit more time to work on them. They should be ready by spring at this point, and maybe a second edition (with MORE recipes and info) will be available next holiday season. I'm so sorry guys...I've been so busy and lost so many babies lately that I've been trying to do my work and spend time with everyone. I'll post an update when I have some prototype hammocks done so you guys can see what options you have for those. I'll keep everyone updated, and hopefully, I'll have a few prototype pages done soon.

Here's one from our website postings
Almond Honey Balls
I use these for skinny or old rats that need an extra boost. They put weight on them, so these aren't for plump rats. : )
1 cup finely chopped or ground almonds
1/4 cup finely chopped sunflower seeds (I use sprouted seeds)
1/4 cup oat meal (not instant)
1/4 cup kefir (homemade or from the health food store)
1 TBS ground flax seed
honey (raw is preferred)
Soak oatmeal in the kefir for at least 2 hours. If you can't find kefir, use yogurt diluted with water to the consistency of cream.
Mix all dry ingredients.
Add the soaked oats and mix well.
Add in just enough honey so that it forms a small ball easily. (usually 2-3 TBS)
If it's too wet, just add a bit more ground almonds or oatmeal.
Roll into small balls and give out one a day to rats that need to gain a little weight or rats that are not eating well.
Freeze the excess.
your more then welcome to use it.

Just a question |
|
My babies LOVE popcorn, I buy the mini-corncobs, and microwave them...the little girls go psycho over the kernals. I was wondering if someone would have a good idea about making popcorn balls for them. I don't want to use sugar obviously, but I always have tiny pieces left over, and (since I hand feed them the bigger pieces) my fingers usually get nipped because they are greedy little ratties that try and take things quickly... ...so trying to feed them the little pieces is just a scary thought to my fingers...haahaaa....
So if anyone has any ideas, I think that it would be a great recipe to add to the cookbook!
THANKS!
Renee

Okay guys, I'm still taking recipes. I don't have enough to justify the cost to print them yet, and no where close to enough photos. If anyone is interested in taking pics, or trying someone else's recipes and taking pics, it would be FABULOUS. Hopefully, we'll have the ones from the old forum soon too Anyone who's willing to help with that will get a hammock for their efforts and credit in the cookbook. Basically, I'm really, really poor right now (the rats are rich though, they have their own account ), so I can't afford to do this all on my own without substantially more content.
I have some fabric now and can make a few hammocks too...I'll be redoing my website and posting pics of the hammocks and such over the next month. I'm still making scarves to raise money for printing costs too. I don't have what you're talking about Wolfpuppy, but I can get something when I get a little more cash.
Also, anyone with layout experience who'd be willing to help, PM me. That part is taking me way too long and I still don't like where I'm getting with things. It's just not professional looking at the moment

Flax seed for garnish (optional)

The ratties love em!
3rd one-------------------------------
Sweet Treats
Holiday Ratty Cookies
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup peanut butter (creamy or chunky)
1 cup milk (or soy milk)
1 tbs baking powder
Flax seed for garnish (optional)
Mix the above ingredients, roll out onto a floured surface, cut into any shape(i used snowflakes cause its the holidays) moisten tops with milk or water and sprinkle with flax seed. bake at 350 for 12 to 15 min until done. cool on wire rack & store in airtight container when cool. can be frozen. From Cinbad4444
Chewy's Turkey Veggie Noodle Bake
1 cup mixed shape whole-wheat noodles
1/2 cup ground turkey breast (chicken brest/thighs will work too)
1/4 cup shredded carrots
1/4 cup shredded butternut squash
1/4 cup chopped broccoli
1/4 cup chopped mixed greens (any kind)
2 eggs
Pre-head oven to 300.
Simmer ground turkey/chicken in water until well done.
Strain the meat, saving the broth and put into a bowl to cool, break the meat into small pieces.
Boil the noodles and carrots in the broth (add more water if needed) until soft....... strain and add the noodles and carrots to the meat.
Add the rest of the veggies into the bowl and mix well.
Add the eggs, mix well and press into a small loaf pan or muffin tins (spray with Pam or other cooking spray so it doesn't stick).
Bake until set (usually 30-45 mins.)
Let it cool and then cut into little squares.
Feed to the rats warm. : )
I then put the squares on a cookie sheet and pop it into the freezer. Once frozen I put them into zip-loc bags. It's then easy to take out a few at a time for the rats. : )
All of my rats LOVE this. : ) It's especially good for pregnant and nursing Moms.
Hope you guys like them.

One of my favorite recepies is fairly simple. I heat up some oatmeal, then chop up little bits of fruit and vegetables and cheese and such and mix it into the oatmeal and let it cool. All my babies have loved it, and it keeps fairly well when refridgerated in a tupperwear container.

I would LOVE The Rattie Cook Book!
And the hammocks sound like a really really good idea for the "Must Match" People (like myself!)
One Of The Things That I feed My Ratties is
Polenta With Sweet Potatoe Sauce (From http://www.rmca.org)
One slice of polenta 1 inch thick
Two tablespoons sweet potato puree
Chopped spinach
I like this because the sweet potatoe is not only tasty
but full of nutrients for the little ones!
If you want
You can take a carrot and either shave some on top or
put little bite size chunklets
(I prefur the Chunklets, the shavings are easier to choke on!)
Ive also put on pretzal or yoggies or really anything...but the absolutly LOVE the sweet potatoe!!!
Another Thing Are Lettice rolls
I also use the Sweet Potatoe puree on a slice of nicely sized lettice
Then...just like the Polenta...you can put anything inside....Sorta like a taco then close it with a little puree acting like the glue. Spinach is also good to use since its a little more nutritiouse!
Hope everything works out great!!!

Awww! I'm still working on it guys...I have the summer as soon as I find a job, so hopefully it actually WILL be done for the holidays this year. If you want a hammock give me a color scheme and I'll send you pics of what I have available. I still have some unpacking to do and the sewing machine is part of it, but perhaps with motivation it'll happen faster

In a steamer cut up 1/2 bag of peeled baby carrots
2 stalks of bok choy
1/4 c. of frozen french style green beans

Steam till carrots are easily pierced with a fork, but not mushy..let cool

Just wondering if you still had my recipe and pic, Jess... are we getting out hammocks yet? I noticed a few others picking patterns..
Also, I'd like to dedicate my recipe if that's possible.. since it was a birthday 'cake', and 3 of the 4 birthday ratties have passed. If possible, could I dedicate it to Oona, Maddie, Neeva & Rainy?

I have a recipe that my rats go crazy over.
Ingredients::
An apple per 3 rats
Peanut Butter
Bird Seed
Rat Food
Sunflower seeds
Directions::
Mix the bird seed, sunflower seeds, and other snacks that the rats like to eat, all together. Then cover the apple in peanut butter. And then roll the apple in the dry food to create a yummy snack. It's good for if your rats aren't eating their food, because I think ALL rats love apples.
(Also apples in peanut butter is a good recipe for humans too).

Nachos la Rata;
For 1 rat-
2 cornchips, about equal size (I use organic blue ones)
Sour cream (ideally soy)
carrot pieces (circular)
tomato piece
put the sour cream on one of the corn chips, them put the carrot, and tomato on, add the last chip

I'd still like for it to happen. I'm just profoundly busy and limited in what I can make and take pics of since I have no time and no oven/stove. Keep submitting recipes tho, I have everyone's archived with their names and any dedications, etc.

Absolutely.. I cook for mine most nights!! I normally cook a bit extra if I'm having pasta rice or potatoes.. and then add some vegetables.. either fresh or steamed.. a little bit of meat now and then, and some bran muesli with raisins.. cold baked beans and yoghurt is good too.they like that.. weirdo rats! i'm all up for the cooking, and the photographing.. i always wanted my own restaurant! hey can you imagine that.. a restaurant for rats.. it would be awesome but i don't think it would catch on!!
